Flashbots

Type: MEV Infrastructure

Flashbots is a research and development organization that builds MEV infrastructure for Ethereum, including the MEV-Boost relay, MEV-Share order flow protocol, and SUAVE (a decentralized block builder). Flashbots’ work has fundamentally shaped Ethereum’s post-Merge MEV landscape.

Market Microstructure Analysis

Flashbots’ MEV-Boost is the proto-PBS implementation that intermediates block production on Ethereum post-Merge. Builders (specialized entities) construct execution payloads and submit bids to relays; validators select the highest-bid block without seeing its contents. This auction-based builder market replaced the first-price PGA-style MEV extraction that dominated pre-Merge Ethereum, reducing network congestion from failed MEV bids and redirecting MEV value toward validators (and thus stakers) rather than being burned in gas fees. MEV-Share extends this by allowing users to submit transactions to a private order flow pool where searchers bid for the right to back-run (not front-run) the user’s trade, returning a portion of the extracted MEV to the user as a rebate. SUAVE (Single Unifying Auction for Value Expression) is Flashbots’ ambitious project to build a decentralized block builder that accepts order flow from multiple chains — a unified MEV market where cross-chain order flow can be efficiently allocated to builders across Ethereum and its L2s. The centralization concern is that Flashbots relays have at times processed the majority of MEV-Boost blocks, creating a concentration of trust in a single organization.
